SNF Advance Beneficiary Notices: An ABN Update and Resource

As you wind down your week, don’t forget—October 31, 2024 is just around the corner, and CMS has some big updates for Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs). The Skilled Nursing Facility Advance Beneficiary Notice (SNF ABN) has been revised, and it’s mandatory for all Medicare Part A services starting at the end of October.

Why Does This Matter for You?

If your SNF isn’t using the updated SNF ABN, you could be facing compliance issues that put your facility at risk. This isn’t just paperwork—it’s about protecting your facility from financial liability when Medicare won’t cover certain services. The SNF ABN helps shift that responsibility to the patient, giving them the information they need to decide whether to go forward with care that might not be covered.

Real-Life Scenarios: How the SNF ABN Works

💡 Example 1: A resident no longer needs daily skilled care but wants to stay in the SNF.

  • Why Medicare Won’t Pay: Medicare only covers skilled care, not supportive or custodial care. If the resident stays, they’ll need to cover room and board costs.

💡 Example 2: A resident has completed skilled therapy but wants to remain in the facility.

  • Why Medicare Won’t Pay: The resident no longer requires skilled services, and custodial care won’t be covered. The SNF ABN lets them know they’ll need to cover these costs.
