Who it is for

Why become a CPR instructor?

Schools and districts

Certify staff in-house

A teacher, school nurse, or athletic trainer who is a certified instructor can keep the whole building current on your own schedule.

Healthcare employers

Keep BLS current, cut costs

Nursing homes, home care agencies, and clinics with an in-house BLS instructor stop chasing expired cards and outside class dates.

Nurses and professionals

Build a teaching business

Nurses, paramedics, and health educators can add CPR instruction as a flexible income stream in their community.

The path

How instructor certification works

The general path is similar for both programs. We walk you through every step and confirm your specific requirements on the call.

  1. 01

    Hold a current provider card

You need a current certification in the course you want to teach, such as AHA BLS or Red Cross CPR/AED. We can certify you first if needed.

  2. 02

    Complete the online portion

AHA instructor candidates complete the Instructor Essentials online course; Red Cross instructor courses include online prerequisite work.

  3. 03

    Attend the classroom course

Hands-on instructor training with our registered nurse faculty: teaching skills, testing, course administration, and equipment.

  4. 04

    Teach under monitoring

New instructors are monitored teaching a course before full instructor status, per program requirements. We help you through it.

Questions

CPR instructor FAQs

Do I need to be a nurse to become a CPR instructor?

No. Many instructors are teachers, coaches, and safety professionals. AHA BLS instructors usually have a healthcare background, while Red Cross CPR/AED and Heartsaver instructors come from many fields.

Which instructor course should I take?

Teach who you serve. If you train healthcare workers, AHA BLS Instructor is usually the right fit. If you train teachers, schools, or workplaces, Red Cross CPR/AED or AHA Heartsaver Instructor fits best.

Can you train several of our employees as instructors at once?

Yes. We can run an instructor course onsite for schools, districts, and healthcare organizations.

Where are instructor courses held?

In Metro Detroit, or onsite at your organization in Michigan for groups.

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course materials, do not represent income to the Association.
